KOLKATA: Less than 12 hours after a complaint was filed, the Kolkata Police retrieved Rs 22 lakh that had been lost to cyber fraud from a businessman in Kolkata’s Posta.
Posta resident Maliram Banwarilal had allegedly received an SMS with a link to update his bank KYC with PAN no around 10pm on Wednesday.
“At first he started filling up the form as appeared after clicking the link but being suspicious about its authenticity he left the form incomplete. After a few moments, someone called him and informed him that if he did not complete the form an amount would be debited from his account. He disconnected the phone, called the customer service of the bank and came to know that there was already a debit of Rs 22 lakhs from his account,” an officer said.
In a state of panic, he ran to the Posta police station to file a complaint before rushing to the cyber cell, which he did around midnight. Upon his arrival at the cyber cell, they immediately sprang into action without any delay.
“By morning, within 12 hours the entire fraud amount was recovered. Timely reporting by the victim and prompt action by Sergeant Somenath Ghosh of cyber cell, central division could prevent the loss of hard-earned money of the complainant,” a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.
