KOLHAPUR: The trial in the February 20, 2015, murder of veteran CPI leader Govind Pansare will begin from March 6 with the recording of evidence by four witnesses before the special ATS court in the city.
At a hearing on Tuesday, the 10 accused, against whom charges have been framed for murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy, pleaded not guilty and sought to be tried.
Special public prosecutor Harshad Nimbalkar said, “To start with the recording of evidence by the witnesses, we have submitted to the court the names of four witnesses we plan to examine on March 6. They include two panch witnesses from Mumbai in whose presence the inquest panchnama of Pansare’s body was carried out after his death while under treatment in a Mumbai hospital and another two panch witnesses associated with the panchnama of the victim’s blood stained clothes and the articles found on the victim.”
Nimbalkar, who is assisted by prosecutor Shivajirao Rane, said, “We have sought the court’s permission to issue summons to the four witnesses to secure their presence for deposition on March 6.”
He said at the last hearing, the prosecution had submitted to the court an elaborate list of witnesses to be examined during the trial. “The number of witnesses could have been reduced had the defence lawyers accepted the panchnama reports relating to the case but the defence did not accept any of these reports and we have to examine panch witnesses,” Nimbalkar said.
On Tuesday, the defence lawyers made a submission that the case diary be handed over to the special court. “We have informed the court that we will submit the case diary, which is supposed to be accessed and read only by the court, on March 6,” Nimbalkar added.
The accused who are to face the trial are: Sameer Vishnu Gaikwad; Virendrasinh Sharadchandra Tawde (who is also a key accused in the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in Pune on August 20, 2013); Amol Arvind Kale; Vasudev Bhagwan Suryawanshi; Bharat Jaywant Kurane; Amit Ramchandra Degvekar; Sharad Bhousaheb Kalaskar; Sachin Prakashrao Andure; Amit Ramchandra Baddi and Ganesh Dashrath Miskin.
