7 Varsities Declared Centres Of Excellence, Fees Likely To Rise | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: The state education department conferred the status of ‘centre of excellence’ on seven private universities through a notification dated March 7. The government had in principle given this status to these universities in 2021, but no notification has been issued. Sources said according to rules, as centres of excellence, these universities will now not be regulated by the fee regulatory committee and will be allowed to increase their fees without seeking government approval.
The seven universities are Ahmedabad University, PDEU, DAIICT, CEPT, Nirma University, Marwadi University and Charusat University.
Sources said these varsities had asked for hefty fee increases in the past, but the fee regulatory committee for technical institutes had not approved their demands. Some of them approached the high court after that. According to sources now, as centres of excellence, the fee structures of these universities are no longer under the FRC’s purview, and they are likely to raise their fees manyfold.
These universities will admit students for the first time after becoming centres of excellence in June 2023 and students may have to pay hefty fees. However, there is no clarity on whether the new fee structures will be for three-year period or whether fees will increase every year. Under the FRC, universities are allowed to increase their fees every three years.
Sources said these universities have already started the process of determining their new fee structures and may announce them soon.
